Hervey Bay seafood pop ups
Karlyle Prawns have regular seafood pop ups in Hervey Bay. Locations include Urangan, Pialba, Torquay Beachside Markets and River Heads. Gordon and his wife Elaine operate the family prawn trawler Karlyle in the Wide Bay region from Bundaberg to Tin Can Bay. Their catch includes seasonal tiger and king prawns, Moreton Bay Bugs and scallops. For more information, go to the Karlyle Prawns Facebook page.
Spearfish for mud crabs
If you’re looking to truly connect with Australian seafood culture, embracing ancient Indigenous traditions is the most authentic and memorable place to begin. Australia’s First Peoples have long enjoyed mud crabs or “muddies”, found around most of the Australian coastline and readily available year-round.
Try your hand at spearfishing and handling as they have been practised for thousands of years with Queensland’s Traditional Landowners via Walkabout Cultural Adventures. Mud crabs are best consumed as soon as possible after catching so, for the best and freshest taste, catch and cook your own lunch (if you can) as you get your hands dirty in the Port Douglas Daintree region for the ultimate culinary cultural adventure.
Distance from Brisbane CBD to the Daintree: 1791km
Seafood buying tips
When it comes to buying seafood, always ask the fishmonger what is in season in the immediate local area. A quality seafood outlet should know where their stock comes from. For the best seafood in your location, go to the Queensland Seafood Industry Association locator.
Celebrate sustainable seafood with Queensland Catch
The Queensland Catch Facebook page is a coast-wide service provided by the Queensland Seafood Industry Association for fishers, consumers and the food service industry. It is regularly updated on where seafood is coming ashore from Queensland waters. Queensland Catch provides tasty recipes, helpful hints and stories from the sea.
