As Queenslanders, we are so lucky to live in a state with such diverse and beautiful scenery. Even in the cooler months of the year, there are so many breathtaking locations you can explore in comfort (especially when you’re towing a JAWA, of course!). So, if you’re keen to get camping in Queensland, here’s some must-see destinations that you just have to experience for yourself.
Bunya Mountains National Park
Oh, the majestic Bunya Mountains! If you’re searching for winter camping spots, this destination is a great place to start. From the stunning bunya pines to roaming wallabies, this is a rainforest haven that you don’t want to miss. Bunya Mountains National Park offers an array of campgrounds, including Danbadah, Wescott and Burtons Well, and there’s a camping area to suit every traveller. However, before you pack up the JAWA, make sure you’ve stocked up on fuel for the trip as there’s no petrol stations located on the mountain.
Conondale National Park
Located on the idyllic Sunshine Coast Hinterland, you’ll find Charlie Moreland’s camping group, situated on the edge of the spectacular Conondale National Park. Here, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in nature and go off grid — so it’s time to pack away the iPhones and your daily distractions. Enjoy the beautiful bushland and take time to enjoy the sensational Conondale Ranges views. And be sure to keep an eye out for all the native birds and wildlife including — kangaroos, koalas, bandicoots and more — that call Conondale National Park home.
Tamborine Mountain
Easily accessible from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Tamborine Mountain offers ample country charm – without those treacherous bush roads. You can spend your time exploring the National Park and Botanic Gardens or venturing to the many lookouts and waterfalls. You can also easily switch gears and explore the local shops, cafes, restaurants, distilleries and wineries such a popular place to visit.
Lake Cootharaba
Like to be close to the water even when it’s a little bit too chilly to take the plunge? Then you’ll love staying at Boreen Point Campground in Noosa. Located on the shores of Lake Cootharaba, this campground is a great choice for travellers who want to enjoy a beachside atmosphere while still relaxing in nature. You can indulge in an array of water sports on the lake or travel further afield to enjoy time spent on the pristine Noosa River. This popular campground is less than half an hour’s drive from downtown Noosa, which offers all the dining, shopping, art, entertainment and nightlife that you could possibly want.
Scenic Rim
If you want to get away from it all, but don’t want to travel too far, then visiting Bigriggen Park in the Scenic Rim is a great choice. This bush camping spot is located between Boonah and Rathdowney, at the foothills of Mt Barney. Go bushwalking on the nearby Mt Maroon and soak up some of the best views in SE Queensland, spanning from Lamington National Park to Mt Barney. You can also enjoy all the simple things in life like taking a dip in the local swimming hole, fishing in the freshwater river or just spending quality time with your four-legged friends (yes, Bigriggen Park is a dog-friendly camping ground).
