1. Watagans National Park
Located on the Central Coast of NSW, Watagans National Park is one-and-a-half hours from the centre of Sydney (which is actually Parramatta and not Sydney CBD). The Watagans are a mixture of state forest and national parks areas. Being near the townships of Morisset or Toronto, you can head into town for supplies. Watagans National Park offers something for everyone with campgrounds (The Pines, Bangalow, and Gap Creek) accessible in the dry to both four-wheel drive and soft-roaders with some sort of all-wheel drive system. In the wet, though, you’ll need a four-wheel drive.
2. Newnes
Located within the Wolgan Valley, within the Wollemi National Park, Newnes is around three hours from Parramatta. Newnes campground is split by the Wolgan River and you’ll need a four-wheel drive to cross at the ford and camp on the other side. From the campsite, you can walk to the glow-worm tunnel (great for the kids), and the old shale oil mine ruins (Newnes Industrial Ruins).
3. Blacksmiths Beach
A little less than two hours north of Sydney, Blacksmiths is regarded as offering one of the best beach drives in NSW. Blacksmiths Beach is not only great driving, but you can also camp on it, with fires and dogs allowed as well as good fishing. There is also Blacksmiths Beachside Holiday Park and others in the area if you require campground facilities.
4. Blue Mountains National Park
Blue Mountains National Park is a world heritage listed site located just two hours from Sydney. With over 140 kilometers of trails, the park offers plenty of opportunities to explore. There are a variety of camping grounds to choose from, including Euroka Campground, which is popular for its easy access and stunning views.
5. Wollemi National Park
Located just north of the Blue Mountains, Wollemi National Park is known for its rugged terrain and scenic beauty. The park offers a range of camping sites, including the popular Colo Meroo campground. With stunning views of the pristine Colo River and plenty of walking tracks to explore, this is a great spot for an off-road camping adventure.
6. Barrington Tops National Park
Situated in the Hunter region, Barrington Tops National Park features rugged mountains, rainforests and waterfalls. It is a great place to explore in your off-road camper. The park offers a range of camping sites, including the popular Junction Pools Campground.
7. Mount Kaputar National Park
Located in the north-west of NSW, Mount Kaputar National Park is known for its stunning vistas and unique flora and fauna. The park offers a range of camping sites, including the popular Dawsons Spring campground.
8. Turon National Park
Turon National Park provides an excellent base for many tracks in the area, such as Sunny Corner just south with its Pinnacle Firetrail, and Ben Bullen to the east. Turon National Park has two main campsites both located on the river, the Woolshed Flat and The Diggings, which are both known for trout fishing. Both campgrounds are ordinarily accessible with AWD vehicles however after rain it can get boggy and the river crossings are too deep for anything other than 4WDs. Turon National Park is approximately 185km north-west of Sydney.
9. Kosciuszko National Park
Kosciuszko National Park is in the Snowy Mountains and is known for its stunning alpine scenery and challenging 4WD tracks. The park offers a range of camping sites, including the popular Island Bend campground. With numerous opportunities for hiking, fishing and exploring, this is a great spot for a camper holiday.
10. Beowa National Park
Located on the NSW south coast, Beowa National Park (formerly Ben Boyd National Park) is known for its stunning coastal scenery and rich Indigenous history.
